Strike 2007! UPDATE

The writers' strike, which has already crippled TV's late night shows, will force Desperate Housewives and several primetime comedies to shut down production. A producer for Desperate Housewives said the hit ABC series will end production today due to a shortage of scripts. This leaves the show without enough completed episodes to continue the current season beyond December. Other series expected to stop production, according to the Associated Press, include CBS' Two and a Half Men, Rules of Engagement, The Big Bang Theory and The New Adventures of Old Christine, as well as Fox's Back to You and 'Til Death.

Because of the strike, not many employees clocked into NBC's The Office on Monday. The Hollywood Reporter says STEVE CARELL did not report to work, although it's unclear whether his absence was in support of the writers. B.J. NOVAK and MINDY KALING, who play Ryan and Kelly and are also writers for the show, are striking, while RAINN WILSON called in sick. Since The Office was short-staffed, only two scenes reportedly were filmed on Monday.

According to Variety, CBS has already prepared for the possibility of a prolonged strike by casting for the upcoming season of Big Brother. The reality series usually airs in the summer, but it now could return as soon as February.TV's major late night shows have scheduled repeats for this week, since their monologues focus on current events.

The writers went on strike on Monday after negotiations the previous day with producers fell through. They are asking for compensation for shows available on the Internet.
