Family Tv Awards

Ugly Betty, Heroes, High School Musical 2 and Pushing Daisies were among the winners at The Ninth Annual Family Television Awards last night in Beverly Hills.

The awards, sponsored by the Family Friendly Programming Forum, are the only ones that recognize outstanding programming for family viewing. The members of the Association of National Advertisers select the winners. PHIL KEOGHAN of The Amazing Race hosted the ceremony, which took place at the Beverly Hilton. He noted that years ago, nearly all television was considered family television. Keoghan explained, "People used to sit down and watch television as families when the choices were very limited." He added, "Today the choices are huge and there's so much variety that there's less family television."

The Family Television Awards will air on Thursday, December 27th at 9pm ET on the CW Network.

Here are the 11 honorees:

HELIO CASTRONEVES may have won the mirrorball trophy on ABC-TV's Dancing with the Stars Tuesday night, but he lost his fiancée. Less than one day after his victory, ALIETTE VAZQUEZ announced that she decided to call off her engagement to the Brazilian race car driver. Vazquez's publicist, HOWARD BRAGMAN, explained yesterday, "There's been a lot of rumors and a lot of stuff said, and she just wanted confirmed that they are no longer engaged. There's no animosity, there's nothing mean. Just a simple confirmation."

Bragman added that he wasn't going to address any rumors of a Dancing with the Stars romance brewing between Castroneves and his dance partner, JULIANNE HOUGH. He said, quote, "I'm not gonna talk about the rumors. I mean they're clearly out there." For her part, Hough confirms that a certain amount of "chemistry" on the dance floor is necessary for a good performance. She said, "We have to make sure that we have chemistry on the dance floor, otherwise we're not gonna entice the audience and I think that's what's a big deal. She added, "And you know the people that are around you that love you and support you should understand that."Castroneves and Vazquez had been together for more than six years and were engaged last year.

Carson Daly is a scab!

CARSON DALY plans to defy the writer's strike and resume production of his late night talk show. Daly is not a member of the Writer's Guild of America, but had joined ranks with other late night hosts and chose to air repeats rather than tape new shows without striking writers.

An NBC spokesperson says Last Call With Carson Daly will begin taping new shows in Burbank for airing next week. It's not clear when the first new show will air or what guests will appear. No word on what effect Daly's decision will have on NBC's other late night shows -- The Tonight Show With Jay Leno and Late Night With Conan O'Brien. Those shows, along with ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live, CBS' Late Show With David Letterman and Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson, continue to air reruns, although there were recent rumors of "back-door talks between the shows' producers about returning to the air before the strike ends. Comedy Central's late night shows -- The Daily Show With Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report -- have also been in reruns.

Rumors of a premature ending to the STRIKE are...

Negotiations continue in the now 24-day-old TV and movie writers strike. While there's no official word on whether progress is being made between the writers and producers, striking horror scribe DON MANCINI, the man who created the "Chucky" character, says he's been hearing reports that talks have been productive. Mancini was walking a picket line outside Warner Brothers Studios Tuesday.

Scrubs star ZACH BRAFF says he's also been hearing some good things, including the possibility that issues between writers and producers could be, quote, "resolved by the end of the week." Braff says Scrubs has now run out of scripts and is shut down until the strike is over. Given that this is the NBC medical comedy's final season, Braff is worried the last six episodes of the series won't be shot if the strike goes on much longer

Strike UPDATE! #774

Although talks between writers and producers resumed yesterday, with the writers strike in its fourth week there are chilly prospects for television viewing ahead. Here's a peek at what the networks have on tap for the next few months if the strike lingers on:

ABC:
ABC-TV's Samantha Who? has six more episodes left. Ugly Betty, Pushing Daisies and Grey's Anatomy each have two new episodes to go. Desperate Housewives airs the last of its new episodes Sunday. The new comedy-drama Cashmere Mafia will arrive with seven episodes completed.

CBS:
The Crime Scene Investigation trio, plus NCIS, Criminal Minds, Without a Trace and Cold Case are down to four or fewer new episodes each. The network's new sitcom Big Bang Theory has also run dry, along with How I Met Your Mother, Two And a Half Men and Rules of Engagement. The New Adventures of Old Christine will be back with at least eight episodes, and the apocalyptic drama Jericho will return with seven episodes.

NBC:
The final new episode of NBC-TV's Heroes airs December 3rd. The Office will only have reruns on deck. In January, Medium will return with nine episodes in the can.

FOX:
FOX-TV airs a new House on Tuesday. After that, only three more new episodes remain. Family Guy has scheduled a normal mix of new and repeat episodes at least through January. K-Ville has two fresh episodes left. The network's new show Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles will have a two-night premiere on January 13th and 14th, and has thirteen episodes completed. And 24 has been postponed indefinitely.

DWTS Odds!

So, who's going to win this season's Dancing with the Stars competition? Right now, it looks like MELANIE BROWN - a least, according to Wynn Las Vegas Casino oddsmaker JOHN AVELLO. Still, Avello was adjusting his finale odds on this season's winner up until the last minute last night. Before seeing last night's performances, they stood as follows:

MELANIE BROWN: 6 to 5
HELIO CASTRONEVES: 2 to 1
MARIE OSMOND: 3 to 1

But the gambling expert was looking to see if Marie, who he believes is the weakest dancer with an incredibly strong fan base, just might have enough for him to change his rankings, moving her to second place. Unfortunately for Marie and her fans, Avello wasn't impressed, and has now declared it an even tighter race between Mel and Helio, with Marie still lagging as the longshot. Here are his latest odds, published just hours ago:

MELANIE BROWN: 7 to 5
HELIO CASTRONEVES: 9 to 5
MARIE OSMOND: 3 to 1

Avello does give Osmond credit for how far she's come. He points out that Helio was his first choice to win on September 24th, followed by Mel as his second choice. Back then, however, Marie was third from bottom, at odds of 22 to 1. (Note: Odds are for entertainment purposes only.)

Donny told Today show co-anchor MEREDITH VIEIRA in a taped interview that aired Monday, quote, "I was very upset about it. I thought it was very unfair for Larry King to throw that question at Marie the way that he did." Then Donny learned shortly after the CNN interview on November 14th that the tabloids were about to break the story. That prompted him to explain to NBC's Today show yesterday, "I have to back up and apologize publicly to Larry King because I came out and said some things against him. In hindsight, Larry King did Marie a favor. She was able to make a statement about the situation. ...And so she's grateful to Larry."

Cross Promotion Part 2

JENNIE GARTH and HELIO CASTRONEVES were schmoozing with the stars last night at the American Music Awards in Los Angeles. They're among the four semifinalists still in contention on ABC's Dancing with the Stars, and Garth has at least one famous fan on her side. She said last night that QUEEN LATIFAH told her on the red carpet that she was doing a great job on the show. Castroneves said he's having fun on the popular reality series, despite the many hours he's spent rehearsing.

High School Musical star MONIQUE COLEMAN can sympathize with Castroneves, since she competed on the third season of Dancing with the Stars. When asked at the AMAs who she thinks will win the Mirror Ball trophy next week, she jokingly said she didn't want to talk about the semifinalists because her favorite contestant, fellow Disney Channel star SABRINA BRYAN, has already been voted off.

One celebrity that Castroneves can count on for support is APOLO ANTON OHNO, the reigning Dancing with the Stars champion. It was Ohno who encouraged the race car driver to participate on the show. He says if Castroneves and partner JULIANNE HOUGH, who danced with Ohno last season, reach the finals, they need to, quote, "step it up and they just have to bring everything out."The semifinal round of Dancing with the Stars airs tonight on ABC

Strikkkeee!!

Thanksgiving is Thursday, but striking Hollywood writers and TV and movie studio heads will talk turkey right after the holiday. The two sides agreed Friday to resume formal negotiations on Monday the 26th. The parties have not met face-to-face since the walkout began November 5th.

Studios are doing some belt-tightening. At NBC, actors on The Office, 30 Rock and Bionic Woman will receive half pay for five weeks, thanks to the force majeure -- or "greater force" -- clause in their Screen Actors Guild (SAG) contracts. That clause also allows studios and networks to fire actors after production has completely shut down on their shows. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the regulars on the Fox show Til Death and CBS' Rules of Engagement are being put on unpaid hiatus.

Variety reports that NBC fired possibly up to 50 production staffers on Saturday Night Live Friday morning and placed the cast on unpaid hiatus. Even so, most of the cast staged a performance of about 15 sketches at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York City Saturday night to benefit SNL staffers affected by the strike. MICHAEL CERA hosted, with musical guest YO LA TENGO. The cast of 30 Rock will deliver a live performance at the same theater tonight.

Strike 2007! UPDATE

NBC's Bionic Woman and the SciFi Channel's Battlestar Galactica have become the latest victims of the writers' strike. The Hollywood Reporter says production of Bionic Woman, which has struggled in the ratings, ended last Friday. Battlestar Galactica reportedly was expected to close up shop today due to a lack of scripts. Both shows are shot in Canada.

The writers began their strike on November 5th, asking for more revenue from online sales and DVD rentals of TV shows and films. They also seek compensation for ad-supported streaming of programs online, an issue that the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, or AMPTP, says it won't concede. The AMPTP also stated in newspaper ads yesterday that it has offered writers a share of licensing fees from websites that offer shows. The Writers Guild says it has turned down that proposal because the payments wouldn't kick in until six weeks after a show is posted online.

Your favorite primetime programs may not produce new episodes for a while, but there's hope that some major late-night TV shows will return as early as next month. According to Variety, representatives for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Show with David Letterman and other late-night shows have had, quote, "secret back-channel conversations" to discuss when the shows could possibly return. Variety says there are some obstacles to overcome -- for instance, none of the shows wants to be the first one to resume production.

In other developments related to the strike, cast members of Saturday Night Live will perform a live show Saturday night at 11:30 p.m. at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in New York City. The performers will deliver sketches, just like a regular SNL episode, except there won't be any cameras rolling. Superbad star MICHAEL CERA will act as the celebrity host. 30 Rock will follow suit at the same venue Monday night when the cast performs an actual episode, although it's not clear if it will be a rerun or not. Tickets for both shows have been sold out.

Save the Cheerleader....

Someone needs to save the cheerleader from Japanese authorities. Heroes star HAYDEN PANETTIERE tells E! News that a warrant has been issued for her arrest in Japan, where she and other activists protested the hunting of dolphins by fishermen late last month.

An emotional Panettiere and others were seen protesting on surfboards in video footage that was widely circulated on the Internet. The 18-year-old actress doesn't sound too concerned by the arrest warrant -- when asked about its consequences, she told E! News, quote, "Potentially jail, but I doubt it." She also said she'd consider joining another protest in the future.

With no end to the writers' strike in sight, Grey's Anatomy actress ELLEN POMPEO can spend as much time as she needs on a honeymoon. A former associate producer for Judge Judy has filed suit against the show, alleging that she was fired and replaced by a younger woman. KAREN NEEDLE, described as, quote, "an over-40 female" in the filing, claims she was told she was fired earlier this year because of an unspecified conflict. However, she alleges that her firing paved the way for a younger woman to replace her. She's seeking unspecified compensatory and general damages from the show and distributor Paramount Pictures...

Strike, Strike, baby

Today marks the 11th day of the writers' strike. While there's no public sign of an imminent deal with producers, there continue to be developments on shows being affected by the strike. Here's the latest news:

* ELLEN DEGENERES has bailed on plans to bring her show to New York City next week. Striking writers had promised to show up and protest her decision to remain on the air during the work stoppage. Instead of appearing in the Big Apple, DeGeneres will continue to tape at her studio in Burbank, California. Though DeGeneres, who is a member of the Writers Guild, has come under fire for continuing to tape her show, Telepictures, which produces The Ellen DeGeneres Show, has released a statement saying she's contractually obligated to make original episodes since hers is a syndicated program and not owned by a network.

* According to the Hollywood Reporter, employees of The Late Show with David Letterman and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson will continue to be paid through the end of the year, even if the strike is still going on at that time. Both late night programs are owned by DAVID LETTERMAN'S Worldwide Pants production company. The decision would make the production company the first and only to hand out paychecks during the strike. According to the Hollywood Reporter, checks will continue to be distributed in order to reassure employees worried about bringing in an income during the strike.

* Fox has elected to continue making new episodes of Family Guy without creator and executive producer SETH MACFARLANE, who is taking part in the strike. Several episodes that MacFarlane had already begun working on will be completed without him, the first of which is slated to air this Sunday. The last new episode done completely with MacFarlane aired last Sunday. It will be particularly interesting to see how episodes without MacFarlane's input turn out, since he provides the voices of many primary characters, including Peter, Stewie and Brian.

* One area in which the writers' strike may not have an impact is coverage of awards shows -- at least not yet. This weekend's American Music Awards, hosted by JIMMY KIMMEL, should go on as scheduled. The show's producer, BARRY ADELMAN, says since everyone knew a strike was on the horizon, the ceremony was pre-written before the work stoppage began. Still, Adelman does admit any topical joke Jimmy Kimmel makes will probably be ad-libbed by him

Should she stay or should she go?

Tonight on CSI, Sara Sidle says good-bye. Actress JORJA FOX is leaving the hit series after being with it from the beginning over seven years ago. She says she needed to take a step back after starring in seven-plus seasons of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Fox says, quote, "I think if the show was only going to go for another year or two, I would have definitely stayed the course, but I think it could go on another decade and I was like, "Whoa, I gotta breathe for a minute."

Fox has had a stormy tenure on CSI -- for example, she was fired in 2004 during contract negotiations, only to be rehired later on. In tonight's episode, airing at 9 p.m. Eastern time on CBS, Sidle comes across a suspect from her past.

Neilsen Ratings

The writers' strike may be in full swing, but it hasn't had much of an effect on the Nielsen ratings just yet. New episodes of shows continued to air last week to the usual numbers, with CSI the week's top-rated show, drawing 21.9 million viewers.

Then again, it may be best to let some shows die when the writers return. Last week's episode of Carpoolers pulled up in 83rd place and Cavemen slumped to 88th. NBC's Bionic Woman also looked pretty rusty -- last week's episode earned its lowest ratings to date, six-and-a-half million viewers for a dismal 65th-place showing.

NBC's Heroes could also use some help. Last week's episode pulled in 9.9 million people and took 33rd place, the worst numbers the critically-acclaimed series has ever scored. One positive note from last week's ratings came from ABC's coverage of the Country Music Awards. It finished in tenth place, thanks to the nearly 16 million people who tuned in.

ABC was the top-ranked network for the week, followed by CBS, Fox, NBC, Univision, the CW, My Network TV, Telemundo and ION Television.

Here's a look at the top 10 primetime shows for the week of Monday, November 5th-Sunday, November 11th.

1. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 21.9 million viewers.
2. Without a Trace, CBS, 21.7 million viewers.

7. NCIS, CBS, 18.1 million viewers.
8. NBC Sunday Night Football, NBC, 17.3 million viewers.
9. Dancing with the Stars (Tuesday), ABC, 17.1 million viewers.
10. CMA Awards, ABC, 15.95 million viewers.

BEN STILLER, JULIA LOUIS-DREYFUS and LISA KUDROW were among the actors who joined the picket lines in Los Angeles. The strike, which began on November 5th, has halted the production of several TV series. Grey's Anatomy star T.R. Actors are also monitoring the strike because their contract expires next June. Two and a Half Men star JON CRYER said yesterday, quote, "This is a fight about the future of our rights as performers on the Internet, 'cause everybody knows that fairly soon TV, as a mode of delivery, is gonna go away." The writers are seeking more compensation for online sales and rentals of TV shows and movies. They have also asked for a cut of revenue from ad-supported streaming of programs online, for which they are currently not paid.

Writers were also seen picketing on New York City's Wall Street yesterday. The writers' strike is having a huge financial impact, and not just on the writers. According to today's New York Post, JAY LENO and DAVID LETTERMAN lose 100 thousand dollars each night their respective shows are forced to broadcast reruns. Baby Hasselbeck UPDATE!

Three days after giving birth to a baby boy, ELISABETH HASSELBECK called her co-hosts on ABC's The View to reveal the child's name. TAYLOR THOMAS HASSELBECK was born Friday at an Arizona hospital, weighing in at just under eight pounds. The 30-year-old Hasselbeck joked yesterday that she was in labor for four or five thousand hours.

Taylor Thomas is Hasselbeck's second child with her husband, Arizona Cardinals football quarterback TIM HASSELBECK. They also share a two-year-old daughter, GRACE. Hasselbeck began her two-and-a-half-month maternity leave on October 23rd.

Strike UPDATE!

With the writers' strike entering its second week yesterday, television and film producers have responded to the writers' demands in full-page ads in Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, or AMPTP, said writers are compensated when TV shows and films are downloaded or rented online. Writers have sought more revenue from downloads, as well as payment for shows that stream on ad-supported sites, including network websites such as ABC.com. The AMPTP said in its ads that there had been an offer on the table to pay writers for such streaming before negotiations ended earlier this month.

In response to the ads, the Writers Guild of America said yesterday that the producers' proposals would have, quote, "decimated writers' incomes."

Several actors have supported the writers since they began their strike early last week. JASON BATEMAN, who stars in the upcoming film Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, says the AMPTP views Internet streaming as a promotional tool rather than a distribution entity, which he claims is unfair. He says, quote, "It's insulting and quite frankly it's embarrassing being in the same business with people that can justify making statements like that." DUSTIN HOFFMAN, who plays Mr. Magorium himself, agrees with his co-star, saying quote, "If the big stars are pocketing and the producers are pocketing then the writers should be pocketing too, period."

Ellen and the Scabs...well

While ELLEN DEGENERES hasn't publicly shed any tears over the writers' strike, the union is trying its best to make her feel bad about continuing production of her talk show. The eastern branch of the Writers Guild of America has vowed to picket her show when it tapes in New York next Monday and Tuesday. Referring to DeGeneres' emotional conflict over the adoption of a dog last month, the WGA East said, quote, "We find it sad that Ellen spent an entire week crying and fighting for a dog that she gave away, yet she couldn't even stand by writers for more than one day."

DeGeneres did not report to work on the first day of the strike, but later taped a show that aired Friday. She acknowledged the strike on the episode, saying she would not perform a monologue in support of her writers. The producer of The Ellen DeGeneres Show claims that DeGeneres is not breaking strike rules since she's performing her own material. The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, or AFTRA, which represents TV personalities such as DeGeneres, also defended the comedian. She's a member of both AFTRA and the Writers Guild.

The major late-night talk shows have aired repeats since the strike began last week. An executive producer for The Tonight Show said in a statement Friday that it has considered using guest hosts in place of JAY LENO. When asked about that report yesterday, Leno replied, "I hope not."

Several primetime series have also felt the effects of the strike. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Scrubs creator BILL LAWRENCE says several episodes for the current season, which is the series' last, have yet to be written. He also says he earlier turned down a request to write a rushed finale to wrap the series in the event of a strike.

Conan's Wacko Fan

The bizarre case surrounding the Roman Catholic priest accused of stalking late night talk show host CONAN O'BRIEN took a bizarre turn Saturday. REVEREND DAVID AJEMIAN was reported missing by his father in Boston after no one saw him for several hours. Then, around 7 p.m., Ajemian turned up and voluntarily went to a hospital.

On Friday, a judge found Ajemian fit to stand trial despite a psychological condition. He was charged with aggravated stalking and harassment after being arrested last week while trying to get into a taping of Late Night with Conan O'Brien. Ajemian, who has referred to himself as O'Brien's, quote, "most dangerous fan," has been accused of writing letters to the host and showing up in Tuscany while O'Brien was on vacation.

While talking to reporters at his parents' Boston home Saturday, the New York Daily News reports Ajemian revealed he would also love to meet PAUL SIMON and confessed he once wrote to FAYE DUNAWAY'S agent, but never got a response.

In lieu of his legal troubles, the Boston Archdiocese has placed Ajemian on leave. Incidentally, Ajemian attended Harvard at the same time O'Brien did, although it's not clear if they ever encountered one another there

The actor-turned-politician said yesterday, quote, "I'm talking to the parties that are involved because I think it's very important that we settle that as quickly as possible, because it has a tremendous economic impact on our state." A Boston priest was arrested last week in New York for stalking late-night talk show host CONAN O'BRIEN and writing him threatening notes on parish letterhead.

The Reverend DAVID AJEMIAN of the Archdiocese of Boston, who referred to himself in one note as Conan's quote, "priest stalker," and signed them quote, "Padre," was apprehended after he tried to enter a taping of Late Night at NBC's studios in Rockefeller Plaza.

Ajemian has been writing notes and e-mails to Conan since September of 2006, and he's even contacted the TV host's parents. If convicted, the priest could face up to a year in prison. In a statement, the Archdiocese of Boston said Ajemian can no longer minister publicly and has been placed on leave.

Strike 2007! UPDATE

NBC's The Office has closed for the foreseeable future after its star, STEVE CARELL, failed to report to work earlier this week. Many other TV series have suffered a similar fate because of the writers' strike, which began on Monday. ABC's Desperate Housewives and CBS' Two and Half Men are among the other shows expected to halt production, for reasons such as a lack of fresh scripts.

Several actors have supported the writers' cause in recent days. Grey's Anatomy star ELLEN POMPEO has accused the networks of being greedy, saying quote, "They're profiting from the sale of the show and they don't want to share the profits."

Family Guy creator SETH MACFARLANE is another TV star who has joined the picket line. According to Variety, he's not interested in helping to complete unfinished episodes of the show. MacFarlane says the latest completed episode of Family Guy airs this Sunday on Fox.

The writers have asked for compensation for shows offered on the Internet. With the strike wreaking havoc on the TV schedule, networks will likely announce plans for alternative programming in the near future. Fox has already tinkered with its midseason schedule -- most notably, the network has postponed the seventh-season premiere of 24, originally scheduled for January, to, quote, "ensure that 'Day 7' can air uninterrupted, in its entirety." American Idol seems safe from the strike, though -- the popular singing competition returns on January 15th.

Nielsen Ratings

SABRINA BRYAN's final week on Dancing with the Stars was a success, at least from ABC's perspective. More than 21 million viewers watched the October 29th edition of the dancing competition, making it the most popular primetime show of the week. Of course, not enough of those viewers cast their vote for Bryan, who was surprisingly booted off the show the following night.

While the highest-rated show of the week also had its fair share of drama, it didn't air in primetime. Sunday's NFL game between the undefeated New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts on CBS averaged 33.4 million viewers, the largest audience for a TV program since the Oscars.

Elsewhere in the Nielsens:

* CBS' The Amazing Race had a pretty amazing season premiere, ranking in 17th place.

* You're still a ratings draw, Charlie Brown. ABC's airing of the classic Halloween special It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown on October 30th was seen by 11.4 million viewers.

CBS won the primetime ratings race for the week, followed by ABC, NBC, Fox, the CW, MyNetworkTV and ION Television.

Here are the top 10 primetime programs for the week of October 29th-November 4th, according to Nielsen Media Research:

1. Dancing with the Stars (Monday), ABC, 21.43 million viewers.
2. Grey's Anatomy, ABC, 19.31 million viewers.
3. 60 Minutes, CBS, 19.24 million viewers.
4. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 19.06 million viewers.
5. Dancing with the Stars (Tuesday), ABC, 18.86 million viewers.
6. Desperate Housewives, ABC, 18.58 million viewers.
7. House, Fox, 17.30 million viewers.
8. NFL Football (Dallas Cowboys at Philadelphia Eagles), NBC, 16.45 million viewers.
9. NCIS, CBS, 16.33 million viewers.
10. Criminal Minds, CBS, 14.94 million viewers

TV Potpourri

NBC's ER isn't quite on life support, despite speculation to the contrary. Executive producer JOHN WELLS tells Variety he will likely discuss the possibility of a 15th season with the network in the near future...

Showtime's Weeds is extinguishing any potential controversy surrounding the current season's final two episodes. According to TVGuide.com, the cable channel has released a statement concerning a story line that evidently mirrors the California wildfires. The note, which was included in press screeners for the show, reads, quote, "These episodes were written and filmed this past summer, long before Southern California experienced a real-life tragedy." The report does not describe the episodes' plot in detail...

Rosie's new show, and we ain't talkin' bout Roseanne!

NBC has confirmed it's in negotiations with ROSIE O'DONNELL to do a one-hour primetime show on the network's cable news channel MSNBC.

O'Donnell added fuel to the fire when she kicked off the New York Comedy Festival with a stand-up routine last night. According to People.com, she confirmed that she's working on a new TV project, telling the audience, quote, "We're filming for an unidentified TV station, which I'm not allowed to mention." She added, quote, "They told me not to mention this possible show, and they are men in business suits. Nothing is scarier than men in business suits screaming at you over the phone."

TV Guide's STEVEN BATTAGLIO says if the deal goes through, viewers can expect to see the same Rosie that stirred up controversy on The View. He says, quote, "If MSNBC is hiring her, they're hiring her to be Rosie, and that means being noisy, being controversial, and even being funny once in a while."

Strike 2007! UPDATE

The writers' strike, which has already crippled TV's late night shows, will force Desperate Housewives and several primetime comedies to shut down production. A producer for Desperate Housewives said the hit ABC series will end production today due to a shortage of scripts. This leaves the show without enough completed episodes to continue the current season beyond December. Other series expected to stop production, according to the Associated Press, include CBS' Two and a Half Men, Rules of Engagement, The Big Bang Theory and The New Adventures of Old Christine, as well as Fox's Back to You and 'Til Death.

Because of the strike, not many employees clocked into NBC's The Office on Monday. The Hollywood Reporter says STEVE CARELL did not report to work, although it's unclear whether his absence was in support of the writers. B.J. NOVAK and MINDY KALING, who play Ryan and Kelly and are also writers for the show, are striking, while RAINN WILSON called in sick. Since The Office was short-staffed, only two scenes reportedly were filmed on Monday.

According to Variety, CBS has already prepared for the possibility of a prolonged strike by casting for the upcoming season of Big Brother. The reality series usually airs in the summer, but it now could return as soon as February.TV's major late night shows have scheduled repeats for this week, since their monologues focus on current events.

The writers went on strike on Monday after negotiations the previous day with producers fell through. They are asking for compensation for shows available on the Internet.

Officials for NBC, meanwhile, say a lot of details need to be worked out before any agreement is finalized...

You Go, DOG!

While DUANE "DOG" CHAPMAN deals with the fallout from one scandal, he got some good news regarding another yesterday. A Mexican judge ruled the star of A&E's Dog the Bounty Hunter -- who caused a stir last week when a tape of him using racial slurs became public -- will not be extradited to Mexico to face kidnapping charges. The U.S. government wanted to send Chapman, his son and a third man to Mexico, where they were charged in 2003 with kidnapping an American man who had jumped bail after being accused of raping three women and fled to Mexico to escape prosecution. Chapman and his crew brought the man back to the U.S., where he was sent to prison. A judge in Mexico dismissed the charges in July, but prosecutors there appealed the ruling.

In other Chapman news, the bounty hunter will try to do some major damage control tonight when he appears on Fox News Channel's Hannity & Colmes. It'll be his first TV interview since the racist comments he made while talking to his son in a phone conversation went public. In light of his comments, A&E has indefinitely suspended production of Dog the Bounty Hunter and pulled the show from its schedule.

Strike UPDATE!

You may have to go to bed without your JAY LENO or DAVID LETTERMAN fix for awhile. Their shows have scheduled repeats for this week as a result of the writers' strike that began yesterday. Same goes for Comedy Central's The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. The major late-night shows are recycling old episodes because they rely on current events for material.

ELLEN DEGENERES didn't report to work yesterday to tape her talk show, which airs during the daytime, in support of her writers. The fate of her show beyond today is uncertain for now. Today's episode was filmed before the strike.DeGeneres wasn't the only TV star to support the writers' cause. JULIA LOUIS-DREYFUS and 30 Rock star TINA FEY joined strikers in California and New York, respectively, while Leno offered doughnuts to writers at NBC's Burbank studio.

The CBS drama Cane was forced to abandon a California café where it was filming due to noise caused by strikers in the area. Production was moved to a nearby CBS lot.The writers are asking for a share of revenue from Internet programming, but say they have dropped a proposal to receive more money from DVD sales. Still, the chief negotiator for the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers doesn't believe a compromise will be reached anytime soon.

Actors should have an interest in how this disagreement will be resolved because, as Julia Louis-Dreyfus noted yesterday, their contract expires next June.

But if they are in high school, how come they are all 23?

Despite rumors to the contrary, a nude photo scandal won't cost VANESSA HUDGENS her spot in the third High School Musical film. According to Us Weekly, Vanessa will receive a raise to return as Gabriella in the upcoming sequel. A source claims that Hudgens' involvement in High School Musical 3 is, quote, "almost a done deal." A published report last month claimed she'd be replaced in the highly-popular Disney franchise after a nude photo of the 18-year-old actress surfaced on the Internet.

Us Weekly also reports that ASHLEY TISDALE has completed negotiations to star in High School Musical 3, while CORBIN BLEU and MONIQUE COLEMAN are in final negotiations. ZAC EFRON, the on-and-off-screen boyfriend of Hudgens, is expected to return as well. However, there is no official casting news on any of these names as of yet.

Curb Your..oh who knows?

LARRY DAVID is enthusiastic about continuing his HBO comedy beyond the current season. According to the New York Post, David has mentioned to friends that he'd like to star in Curb Your Enthusiasm for a few more seasons. Such talk would be a departure for David, who is usually non-committal about the long-term future of his show...

So You Think American You Can Idol Dance?

Next summer's American Idol tour could become a real song-and-dance show. The New York Post reports that Idol executive producer NIGEL LYTHGOE would like for the tours for the singing competition and another hit Fox reality series, So You Think You Can Dance, to combine into one show.

Lythgoe has also repeated his desire to focus more on the contestants and less on the mentors during Idol's seventh season. He says, quote, "There are legends in our business that hopefully will come along as mentors on Idol this season -- but not every single week."

Another possible change on Idol for the upcoming season? Contestants may have the chance to play an instrument on the show. Lythgoe says, quote, "We'll make a decision when we see how many really talented people we have."

It Ain't Easy Bein' Green

Green is the color of choice for the Peacock network this week as NBC promotes the environment in the coming days, most notably on the Today show. MATT LAUER, AL ROKER and ANN CURRY will broadcast from Greenland, the Equator and the Antarctic, respectively. In addition, former Vice President AL GORE will guest star on 30 Rock, and the game show Deal or No Deal will conserve energy in a special episode.

Strrrike Three...Yer Out!

Hollywood and New York film and television writers are on strike today after last-minute efforts to negotiate an agreement failed yesterday. A federal mediator had called a meeting between both sides -- the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers -- but those talks ended after East Coast members of the writers union declared they were on strike.

The writers, whose most recent contract expired last week, are striking for the first time in nearly 20 years. One of the key issues is how much writers receive from DVD sales and use of their work on the Internet and in other new media. Late-night talk shows will immediately suffer from a strike, since their monologues reference current events. Perhaps in anticipation of the strike, The Tonight Show and The Daily Show have scheduled reruns for this week.

Primetime TV shows and the movie industry won't be as affected by a strike -- at least in the short term -- since they have scripts in reserve. However, if those scripts run out before the strike ends, many television seasons will be shortened.

"The Strike"

More from the AP on the Strike

Film and TV writers prepared to go on strike Monday for the first time in two decades to break what has become a high-stakes stalemate with the world's largest media companies over profits from DVDs and programming on the Internet.

Writers Guild of America board members voted unanimously Friday to begin the strike at 12:01 a.m. Pacific time (3:01 a.m. EST) unless studios offered a more lucrative deal with a bigger cut from video sales and shows sold or streamed over the Web.
"The studios made it clear that they would rather shut down this town than reach a fair and reasonable deal," Patric Verrone, president of the western chapter of the guild, said at a news conference.

The union said it would stage its first pickets in New York and Los Angeles after strike captains meet Saturday to finalize details.

Both sides agreed late Friday to meet with a federal mediator on Sunday in a last-ditch effort to avoid a strike. The meeting will take place at a neutral location to be determined, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers said.

Earlier in the day, J. Nicholas Counter, president of the producers' group, called the writers' strike "precipitous and irresponsible" in a prepared statement.

Producers believe progress can be made on other issues but "it makes absolutely no sense to increase the burden of this additional compensation" involving DVDs and the Internet, he said.
Last year alone, members of the western chapter of the guild were paid $56 million in additional compensation from DVD residuals, he said.

The first casualty of the strike would be late-night talk shows, which are dependent on current events to fuel monologues and other entertainment.

"The Tonight Show" on NBC will go into reruns starting Monday if last-ditch negotiations fail and a strike begins, according to a network official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the person lacked authorization to comment publicly.

Garth Brooks and Tommy Lee Jones were the scheduled guests.

Comedy Central has said "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" and "The Colbert Report" would likely go into repeats as well.

A message left seeking CBS comment on plans for "The Late Show with David Letterman" in New York was not immediately returned Friday evening.

During the 1988 writers strike, Letterman, then host of NBC's "Late Night," and longtime "Tonight Show" host Johnny Carson initially went off the air but later returned as the walkout dragged on for 22 weeks and cost the industry about $500 million.

Daytime TV, including live talk shows such as "The View" and soap operas, which typically tape about a week's worth of shows in advance, would be next to feel the impact.

The strike will not immediately impact production of movies or prime-time TV programs. Most studios have stockpiled dozens of movie scripts, and TV shows have enough scripts or completed shows in hand to last until early next year.

There could be widespread disruptions in Hollywood as other unions support the writers.
Officials with the Screen Actors Guild have told members they must report for work but encouraged them to join picket lines during their off-time.

A similar message came from the head of a local Teamsters union. However, those workers were told they were protected by law from employer retribution if they honored strike lines.
John Bowman, chief negotiator for the writers guild and the producer on an upcoming TBS show "Frank, TV," said he would not cross picket lines, even if it cost his job.

"Unfortunately we have to inflict as much damage as we can as soon as possible in order to get this thing over," he said.

The economic impact of a strike is hard to estimate because not all production will be halted at once, economists said.

"There definitely will be pain," said Jack Kyser, chief economist for the Los Angeles Economic Development Corp.

The entertainment industry contributes about $30 billion a year to the Los Angeles economy, or about $80 million a day, he said.

**Even though we are talking about multi millionaires 20 times over (Letterman, Leno etc) who don't need the money, this should be wrapped up soon...a long strike would be bad for everyone..
